Thinking Outside the Box: Growing Big Ideas from Books

We’ve been talking a lot about growing big ideas from the nonfiction and fiction texts we’ve read all year. Examples of this come from reading Big Bad Bruce and growing the idea that you should treat others the way you want to be treated or reading about Harriet Tubman’s life and growing an idea that one person can make a big difference or reading about sharks and growing the idea that sharks and humans have a lot of similarities or that we should respect all living things.

Now it’s your turn to share. Let us know about two books you have read recently and the big idea(s) you’ve grown from those books. Before you blog, you might want to take a look at your classmates’ responses and see what they have written.

Remember, use your best spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.

Your truly,

Ms. Xavier

What have you been up to this snowy, icy week?

Let us know what you’ve been doing this week, kids. I’ve been taking Peanut, my foster dog, out for walks and watching him slide and slip as we try to stay upright on the sidewalks. It’s quite funny!

Let’s take different perspectives like we do in class. If you are numbers 1-10 you are in favor of keeping animals in cages – in captivity. If you are numbers 11-20, then you are against keeping animals in captivity. Back up your thesis with at least two reasons why you believe that. Read your classmates’ arguments and see if you come up with the same reasons or different ones.

Remember, spelling is important, so do your best.

I will only approve your blog response once I read it, so don’t worry if it doesn’t appear right away.

Friends,

You have been so busy building a reading life in 3rd grade these last few weeks. It would be fascinating to find out how your reading life is similar or different from the reading life of your parent(s). Interview them and tell us (blog) about your findings! Do you both love to read in bed? Do you prefer fiction and your parent prefers poetry?  Do you both like to read after you have a snack? Let us know!!!!

Yours truly,

Ms. Xavier

Should kids have a bedtime? Numbers 1-10, you are NOT in favor of having a specific bedtime, while numbers 11-20 ARE in favor of having a specific bedtime.

I can’t wait to read your arguments!!!!! Have fun and grow your thoughts here. Remember to capitalize and punctuate!!!!

Students 1-10 are in favor of women being payed as much as men. Students 11-20 you oppose women being payed as much as men. Have fun backing up your evidence!!! Remember, use complete sentences with correct spelling and punctuation. :-)

Dear students,

We are nearly halfway done with our school year and you kids have grown so much as thinkers! Think about how you’ve grown in math, reading, writing, and/or social studies and share a couple of things you can now do that maybe you weren’t very good at before or maybe something you didn’t know how to do last year. Please give some evidence to back up your ideas. Remeber to include at least 4 complete sentences to back up what you have learned.

Remember, sign your first name only. Don’t be worried if your blog does not show right away; I have to log on and approve it first.  Have fun voicing your thoughts!
